Buyer Guide Carpet Cleaning Machines

Buying a carpet cleaning machine can be confusing. There are so many choices. Which one is right for me? How do I know what I’m buying is worth the money? This article will help you sort through all that.

  • Pricing. Vacuum or shampoo? Do you want a handheld? Do you want a carpet extractor or a carpet cleaner? Are you buying an upright? The answers to these and other questions will help you determine your budget.
  • General Features. Features like portability, attachments, and warranty are important.
  • Power. Carpet cleaning machines are measured in watts. The higher the wattage, the faster the cleaning process.
  • Tank Capacity. How much water does the machine hold?
  • Cleaning Capabilities. Carpet cleaning machines can be steam or dry. Dry cleaning units use dry chemicals, and wet units use water.
  • Cleaning Method. Most carpet cleaners use either suction or spray.
  • Carpet Type and Fiber. Different carpet fibers require different types of cleaning methods.
  • Condition of Carpet. The condition of the carpet will determine how much detergent you need.

How to choose Carpet Cleaning Machines

Choosing the right carpet-cleaning machine can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are several factors to keep in mind when you’re choosing which machine will work best for your household.

  • Size & power: In general, cordless carpet cleaners run on a lithium battery, while corded models run on electricity. Some options also come with a 120-volt plug for charging.
  • Carpet type: Carpeting comes in many varieties. Wool, synthetic, and nylon carpets, and carpeting made of different types of material require different cleaning techniques.
  • Stains: Some stains, such as red wine, blood, and pet urine, require special cleaning solutions to remove.
  • Solution type: Most carpet cleaners use a combination of cleaning solutions, which vary depending on the kind of stain. Some options use a combination of cleaning solutions and a built-in beater to loosen particles.
  • Warranty: Most manufacturers offer warranties on their products. Most warranties cover parts and labor, but some only cover cleaning solutions or labor.
  • Maintenance: Some carpet cleaning machines require maintenance, such as replacing the cleaning solution.
  • Cleaning tools: Some machines come with several different cleaning heads, which are designed to tackle various stains.
  • Attachments: Some cleaning machines have attachments specifically designed to remove pet hair from carpets and upholstery. Some of these attachments can also be used to clean other surfaces, such as tile or wood floors.
  • Cost: The cost of a carpet cleaner can vary widely, depending on the type of machine. Cordless models are less expensive but are still typically more expensive than corded models.
  • Reviews: In addition to reading product descriptions, read customer reviews to get a better idea of the customer service that a particular manufacturer provides.

How to maintain Carpet Cleaning Machines

Maintaining a carpet cleaning machine means cleaning the agitator, the hoses, the spray wand, and the vacuum head.

  • First thing first: empty the water tank. Then, grab a rag and wipe down the agitator – any caked-on grime and hair that has built up here can affect the fibers of your carpet. Next, remove the hoses and spray wand from the machine and wash them separately.
  • Rinse the hose and spray the wand in lukewarm water. Then, add a little bit of mild liquid detergent and swish it around in the wand and hose.
  • Let the hose and wand sit for 10 minutes, and then scrub them down with a nylon scrub brush.
  • Rinse the hose and wand under cold running water, and then let them air dry.
  • Once dry, reattach the hoses and wand and reattach the spray wand to the hose assembly.
  • Next, remove the vacuum head from the machine, and run warm water over the vacuum head.
  • Once the water runs clear, scrub down the inside of the head with a small nylon scrub brush.
  • Rinse the head under cold running water, then wash it separately.
  • Once the head is dry, reattach it to the vacuum assembly.
  • Finally, reattach the water tank and vacuum hose to the machine.
